Throughout human history systems of worship were invented by humans and used by Satan and his demons to distract mankind from the worship of the true God. (Ro 1:21-23, 1 Co 10:20; Ps 106:36, 37) Certain periods in human history especially highlight this fact. For example:
Greek Period. The athletic games that were held in ancient Greek cities such as Olympia, Delphi, and Nemea were celebrations in honor of and worship of the Greek Gods Zeus and Poseidon. Furthermore, there were thousands of other gods and goddesses that were worshiped by the Greek people and many of these same gods were adopted by the ancient Romans. This false worship presented many challenges to the faithful Jews living during the spread of Hellenism.
Roman Period. In addition to the adopted Greek Gods, the Romans blended the worship of the gods in other lands into their complex religious belief systems. Moreover, Roman Emperors were worshiped posthumously such as Augustus, Tiberius and Caligula as well as others. Worshiping hundreds of thousands of Gods was not viewed as unusual by the Roman people. However, this presented a challenge to first-century Christians, who were viewed with disdain and suspicion, because of their worshipping only one true god. (John 17:3)
The Bible and God-Directed Organizations. In contrast, Jehovah God provided his Word the Bible which has given honest hearted humans, throughout human history, direction on how to worship him properly. (John 17:3) Additionally, God raised up organizations, over time, that enabled his servants to maintain pure worship.
